Medita Series - Instruments for Meditation
In search of improving my own meditation practice, I have designed a series of instruments. The sound produces a focal point, facilitating concentration and enabling a deeper meditative state. This work is ongoing research, developed at Autodesk’s Pier 9 and the A/D/O Residency in New York.
Sound Interaction
Meditation practitioners commonly use bells and bowls to assist them, usually by striking or rubbing an object to cause friction and emit the sound. This action itself interrupts the focus required to achieve a meditative state. The medita instruments remove this action, emitting an infinite tone that requires no input from the practitioner.
Material Sound
The material properties of the instruments give them a sonic characteristic of depth and richness, which are projected directly into the practitioner. The vibrations promote immersion into a deep meditative state.
Acknowledgment
This work would not be possible if not for the amazing staff, facilites, and opportunities afforded to me by the Autodesk Pier 9 and A/D/O MINI residencies. Thank you.
